Poronui Ranch, New Zealand
Poronui Ranch is a 16,000 acre private estate hidden in a secluded mountain valley between the shores of Lake Taupo and the coastal plains of the Pacific Ocean and captures the spirit of leisurely informality that characterizes rural New Zealand. Poronui Ranch lodge heralds a new standard of comfort and space but retains the same warmth and intimate hospitality for which the staff has developed such an enviable reputation over the last decade.
The lodge has evolved from what was once a remote fishing camp into one of the world's finest fly fishing destinations - a purpose built facility designed by fishermen in response to the every need of the most discerning international angler.
The solid timber main lodge captures the undisguised but traditional luxury of a bygone era with a huge open log fire and antique leather furnishings. There are just five private guest suites, each with panoramic views over the ranch and situated right on the stream edge, offering solitude and comfort in splendid yet unpretentious surroundings.
About the only things that have not changed on the property are the people and the fishing. At the lodge the focus is on the outdoors and because some of the best dry fly fishing in the country is on the lodge's own 25 miles of private water, they set their schedule according to the best fishing time - often the ritual of dinner is interrupted by the chance to "match the hatch" and fish the evening rise on darkness.
Poronui offers many options for the non-angler too. From horseback riding, mountain biking and trekking to wine tours and shopping trips.
